Making the ‘right’ choice…

There are times when life asks you to choose (a path).

But, how can I actually discern which is the right path for me in a given moment? And by ‘right’ I mean the most aligned with my soul’s desires and expansion.

What perplexes even more making a decision, is that, often, the right path is usually not the comfortable one, and certainly not the familiar or habitual one. The right path is not always the easier or more joyful one (in the short term). However, it is certainly the one that will lead you to long term joy, freedom and inner peace.

You see, when we are called to make a life changing decision, is often the case that the ‘right’ decision will lead you somewhere you do NOT like to be (at least in the short run), i.e. will disrupt your familiar and comfortable reality. A life changing decision will usually call you towards unchartered waters and territories you have probably never walked on before. And that is scary to the human mind. Unpredictability = potential danger (i.e. to avoid at all costs).

The good news is that choices in life are not back and white. Probably there are also milder choices you have not even perceived to be available to you. Or even allowing more time for you to process your emotions before you decide. In practice, any choice available, at any given moment, will eventually lead you exactly where you need to be to experience whatever your soul has come here to experience. It’s just that by making aligned choices, you’ll have a more meaningful and fulfilling life experience.

Making a choice is easy, or so it should be, someone could say: Always choose the path of least resistance at any given moment (i.e., whatever feels more aligned to you in that moment).

But least resistance for who? For which part of me?

Because as human beings, we are partly soul but also a body and a social animal conditioned to live, act and behave in certain ways and in alignment with certain narratives and belief systems. So, when your soul’s ‘right’ path is faced up against the preferred path of the multilayered and compartmentalized conditioned self, then the choice of the path of least resistance can very easily become an (almost) impossible task for the mind to solve.

Mind = survival oriented, Soul = expansion oriented. Concepts often conflicted.

And that’s exactly where the human (conscious) mind freaks out and starts overthinking and overanalyzing all various options, pros and cons, only to conclude that no option available is 100% a good enough option. And so, you postpone making a choice.

however, no matter how much you’d like to stay in your comfort, the calling, the nudges, the (mental, emotional, physical) discomfort, will move you out of your comfort zone sooner or later. There is no way around that truth. The more you resist the change/choice, the louder the ‘symptoms’ of that resistance will become in your life. Physical and mental disease is also a symptom of an overdue choice, i.e. resistance to your soul’s path.

So then, how can I truly know which path is that for me? I hear you ask.

The answer is brutally simple and straight forward: You know! You always do!

Overthinking and weighing out your options in attempt to avoid making the choice, may buy you time, but that alone cannot prevent the inevitable. As soon as the soul calls for change the call will be answered, one way or the other.

Spoiler alert: The soul-aligned decision/choice is most likely the one you’re afraid to follow the most, yet somehow you deeply feel that if you’d follow it you’d be ok (i.e., safe, excited, fulfilled, loved, protected, free, in peace).
